Today’s
lament is in the same theme as yesterday’s passage. God laments over the destruction of the Pharaoh. In fact, it is probably better stated that
God laments that the destruction of Pharaoh is necessary. God is a righteous judge; H can judge
properly. What He laments is that we
make it necessary.
Look at the
long list of nations and leaders that have had to be brought down. Hear what is in most of the sections. Leaders are brought down for the fear they
cast among the people. They are brought
down for the terror they reveal. Nations
are judged and toppled because of the ruthlessness they showed.
It goes back
to the point from yesterday’s reading.
Human hubris is powerful. We like
to become king of the hill.
Unfortunately, when we do become king of the hill we become a despot
rather than a benevolent leader who continues to look out for those around
them. Power corrupts, absolute power
corrupts absolutely.
This is why
God laments.
