With the
sacrifice and the pray offered up, God responds. He consumes the offerings on the altar and
then comes to Solomon to speak. God has
already spoken to Solomon when Solomon requested wisdom, so this is not an odd
thing in Solomon’s life.
What does
God say? His answer is remarkably
simple. God tells Solomon that if the
people walk in His ways then He will be with them. He also tells Solomon that if Solomon walks
in God’s ways, the God will establish Solomon’s throne. It’s a very simple promise. If a person lives righteously, then God will
be with them.
God also
says that if the people sin but turn from their sin, then God will relent from judgment. It is important, though, to understand what
God says exactly. First, repentance
involves being humble. Second, we need
to pray and seek God. Third, repentance
involves turning from sinful behavior. God
wants more than lip service. God was a
change of heart instead of a change in voice.
Finally, God
tells the people that if they don’t repent, God will not hold His hand back in
judgment. In fact, God gets more
personal. God tells the people that if
they forsake Him, then He will cast them out of His sight. He will scatter them into the world. What God is saying is that if the people don’t
repent on their own, then God will be proactive in showing them the error of
their ways.
