Year 4, Day 153: Deuteronomy 2

Theological Commentary: Click Here

Discipleship Focus: Character

  • Character: Having the interior life that is necessary to support the work that God sets before a person.  It is hearing from God and obeying.  It is doing the right thing when nobody is looking.

Obviously we can speak of our own character.  But our own character starts with the very character of God.  We are at our best when we are imitating the character that we see in God.

So what character do we see in God in Deuteronomy 2?  We see a God who does not forget His promises.  We see a God who is righteous even when the people are not.  We see a God who honors His commitments to Esau and Lot even if the people of those lands are no longer worshipping Him as their forefathers once did.

We as human beings are often quick to forgo our promises when the other person doesn’t hold up their end of the bargain.  That isn’t what we see in God.  God is a God of faithfulness; His people should be about the same thing.  If we expect God to honor His promise even when we sin against Him, we should follow in His paths.  In other words, we should be a people about making promises we only intend on keeping regardless of whether the other person keeps their end of the bargain.
