Year 6, Day 123: James 1

Theological Commentary: Click Here

Discipleship Focus: Calling

  • Calling asks whether or not God has called the person to the particular work at this point in their life.

James ends this first chapter on a really neat point.  We are to be doers of the Word, not just hearers only.  Our faith is something that is to be put into action.  Our faith is not just something to be bottled up and treasured in our heart.  Our faith is to guide our actions and be on display.

This should make sense.  God is the ultimate source of righteousness and faith.  But did God sit up in heaven and be content in His righteousness?  No!  God sent His Spirit through prophets to teach us and hold us accountable to His ways.  God sent His Son to teach us and model godly living.  God sent His Son to us to die for our sake so that we can partake in His righteousness.  We have a God that models doing.  We have a God that shows us first what it looks like to put faith into practice before asking us to go out and do likewise.

This is our calling.  God calls us to His side.  He calls us to listen to His Spirit.  But then He calls us out into the world to go and do and show the world what faith looks like.
