Discipleship Focus: Identity

  • Identity: Our true identity comes from the Father.  Only when our identity comes from God can we be obedient in ways that satisfy our person to our core.

Before we get to the story of Passover and the last plague, we have a short chapter regarding God’s promise to the Hebrew people.  God tells Moses that He will do something that will demonstrate His power.  God will not only bring the people out of Egypt, He will bring them out of Egypt with the wealth of the Egyptians in tow.  Now that a demonstration of God’s power!

However, I don’t think that ultimately this is a story about power or authority.  I believe this is a story of identity.  It is my belief that the Egyptians have come in contact with an incredible power.  They have begun to realize that they cannot compete with God.  They cannot match His power.  Therefore, they have to either change their identity and embrace His worship or drive the Hebrew people out of their life so that they can continue living as they had been living: in absence of God.

I believe in the end – after the last plague is unveiled – that the Egyptians give the Hebrew people their gold and silver to get rid of them.  Rather than change their identity so that it comes from the Father, they trade their wealth for the ability to continue to define their own existence.  It is amazing to see the lengths people will go in order to keep the identity they desire rather than the identity that God would desire for them.
