Year 4, Day 61: Exodus 12

Theological Commentary: Click Here

Discipleship Focus: Obedience, Power

  • Obedience: Genuine and satisfying obedience comes out of our identity.  Our true identity comes only from Father.
  • Power: This is the natural outcome when we truly get our authority from the king.  When our authority is from God, we are equipped with His power to accomplish His will.  We act on His behalf in a world that He desperately loves.

With the conclusion of the plagues, we’ll complete our simultaneous look at the covenant and kingdom triangles.  Here as Passover and the last plague occur, we have a great look into obedience and power.

Of course by now we know that obedience comes out of our identity and our identity comes out of the Father.  We can see this powerfully in this story.  God comes to Moses and explains to him the Passover.  He tells the Hebrew people to trust in the blood of the lamb that they sprinkle over their doorpost.  Imagine being obedient to such a command!  Would you be able to stay still knowing that the only thing that was separating you from death was a little lamb’s blood?  No, this is only possible because the Hebrew people have understood their identity as God’s people.  The act of Passover is an incredible outcome of an understanding of one’s identity.

However, we also get a great display of power in this chapter.  Of course, there is the power of God on display in the angel of death.  What an incredible display of power that is.  But there is also a display of power on behalf of the Hebrew people.  As I wrote about yesterday, God enables the Hebrew people to plunder the Egyptians – or perhaps it is better said that God has put the Egyptians in a position of wanting to buy an escape out from under God.  In this position, the Hebrew people act out of their authority and embrace the power of plundering the Egyptians.
