Year 6, Day 245: Micah 5

Theological Commentary: Click Here

Discipleship Focus: Calling

  • Calling asks whether or not God has called the person to the particular work at this point in their life.

When we look at Micah 5, especially the opening of Micah 5, we often get so hung up over the connection of the Messiah and Bethlehem that we nearly miss a far more important point.  What does God say about the Messiah?  The Messiah comes forth for God.  The Messiah comes to do the will of the Father.  The Messiah will be a great leader, but the Messiah knows His place.  That’s actually what makes Him the Messiah. The Messiah comes to accomplish the will of the Father.

This gives us a really good connection to the idea of calling.  Do we want to do the will of God or do we want God to stand by and approve of our will?  Are we focused on looking to accomplish the will of our Father or are we seeking to accomplish our own dreams and aspirations?

If I had to really be honest about it, I would say that this is one of my favorite reasons as to why the Messiah had to be the Son of God – true God from true God.  What human being is perpetually focused on God’s will and never slips to focusing on their own will?  We can try our best, but we seldom get right for very long.  God’s Messiah will come to accomplish His will and His will alone.
