Today we the
separation of the Levites. We shouldn’t
get this confused with the separation of the priests. The priests were a special subset of
Levites. They served God directly,
whereas the Levites served God by serving among the people. Another difference is that the priests didn’t
start serving until 30 whereas the Levites begin their experience at 25.
All of the
differences aside, we can be clear on one very consistent message. As God is claiming His people and separating
them from the secular world, one of the most important things to God is the
Levites and priests. Again and again we
hear about their consecration, sacrifices, and their separation.
Why should
we pay attention to this? As time has
passed, things are absolutely no different today than way back then. God wants people to serve Him. God wants people to serve Him personally; He
also wants people who will serve Him by serving among the people. Our Father is quite serious about desiring
people to serve Him. I would be willing
to bet that as far as the Law is concerned, there is more space dedicated to
the work and sanctification of His priests and Levites than any other topic,
even.
Therefore,
we must as ourselves a question. Where
am I serving? How do I serve in the
presence of God? How do I serve God in
the world, declaring His presence to the world as I go through my life? If these are the things that are important to
God, they should be important to me.
