Today we
have a fitting ending for the book of Ecclesiastes. All book long we’ve been talking about
contrasting ideas. We’ve continually landed
in the truth that anything – even good things – taken to extremes are
vanity. Moderation, and its varied
perspective, brings about good situation and truth.
In the end,
the best advice is last. Fear the
Lord. Remember Him in our youth. We’ll have good days and bad days. We’ll have days of rain and days of
sunshine. All of those days will come
and go. What will remain is the
Lord. One day we will return to Him when
our life here is spent. We should focus
on being in Him.
He will be
our judge. He will know and reveal what
is in our heart. There will be no hiding
from His truth and knowledge and justice.
Fortunately, there will also be no hiding from His mercy, either.
He is the
end. Truth comes from Him. In fact, the author tells us that we should
be wary of truth and sayings beyond what He can offer us. That really is the point of this whole
book. That which outside is vanity. That which is apart from God will fade
away. If we want to know lasting joy, we
need to make sure we a re a part of things that are a part of God.
