In Exodus
13, we hear multiple times about the importance of the work of the Lord. It is the Lord’s hand who brings the people
out of Egypt. It is the hardness of
Pharaoh’s heart that the Lord uses to free them. It is the Lord who chose for them to go the
way of the sea rather than the way of the Philistines. It is the Lord who leads the people with a
pillar of smoke and fire.
This chapter
is a great chapter to follow the chapters on the plagues. The plagues were all about demonstrating the
greatness of God. Here in this chapter
we have almost everything that happens connected to and attribution to the
Lord.
The other
dynamic of the work of the Lord in this chapter can be seen with respect to faith
development. Twice in this chapter we
hear about the importance of explaining the Passover and the exodus to the next
generation. We are to be clear in our
explanation. We are to be direct in our
teaching. We are to not waver in
attributing what happened to the power of God.
This is
vital to remember as we continue to read through the Old Testament as well as
in our own life. As we read through the
history of the Hebrew people, count how many times the people forget who God is
and what God has done for them. Count
how many times the heart of the people wanders away from God because they
forget who He is. If we want people to
have a chance in remaining faithful to God and having a meaningful relationship
with Him, we must be willing to tell our story and the story of others within whom
God has worked.
