Year 4, Day 186: Joshua 1

Theological Commentary: Click Here

Discipleship Focus: Calling

  • Calling asks whether or not God has called the person to the particular work at this point in their life.

Here’s a great chapter for us to pause for just a moment as we go through these books leading us from the Exodus into the Promised Land.  As Joshua pauses to remind the people about what they are doing it is good for us to do the same.  Sometimes it is good for us to do a check on our spiritual path mid-course.

This chapter is all about calling.  God begins with Joshua reminding him about his calling.  Be strong.  Be courageous.  Keep the Word of the Lord near you.  Don’t forget what you are about.  Things will go well for you if you remember God.  There is Joshua’s calling.  He has it within him.  The question as we begin this book of the Bible is whether Joshua will follow God’s calling as closely as Moses did.

But Joshua isn’t the only one whose calling is in question.  Joshua then turns to the people and puts them through the same paces.  Will they step up to the challenge?  We already know they were rebellious under Moses.  But this is a new generation.  Will they be more obedient?  Their calling is evident as well.  The question we are left with as we open Joshua is whether or not the people will respond better than they did under Moses.

What’s your calling?  How well do you respond to God?
