Year 5, Day 244: Psalm 115

Theological Commentary: Click Here

Discipleship Focus: Up

  • Up: Up is the word we use for what we worship.  If we are following God’s will, God will occupy the Up position.  Our life, our identity, our mission, our family on mission is all derived from Up.  This is why God needs to be in our Up position.

This is another great day to look at Up.  But today I want to look at it from a perspective that I don’t usually use.  Instead of talking about Up with respect to God, let’s talk about Up with respect to other gods.

Who among us don’t worship other gods?  We might not have idols and statues like ancient cultures.  But do we not worship human constructs like money?  Do we not worship human ideals like education or status?  Do we not worship human inventions like social media, cars, or houses?  Yes, we all have gods in our lives.

But which of our gods actually can do anything for us?  Do our gods have eyes to see our needs?  Do they have ears to hear our call for help?  Do they have hands and feet to work wonders in the world?  Do they have a mind with which to plan the course of our future?  Do they have a heart to look upon us with grace, love, and mercy?

No, of course not.  They are our gods not because they deserve to be but because we make them the apple of our eye.  Only the Father has those things and uses them for us.  Only the Father is worthy of our praise.
