These are
the last words of the Christian Old Testament.
I love that these are the final words prior to the story of Christ
beginning. There is something to be said
about the promises in these verses and then jumping right into Christ.
The first
image that we see is that of a refiner. Refiners
take impure things and make them pure.
Another way of saying this is that they take things of marginal value
and make them more valuable by taking away.
God does that with us. He comes
and purifies us. He makes us more
valuable by taking away our sinfulness.
Then God says
He comes as judge. There are days when
the judge language of God is frightening.
There are other days when the judge language of God is reassuring. Today is a reassuring day. God will be a witness against the
wicked. But He will be a witness for the
people who are the laborers, the orphans, the widows, the hospitable, and those
who fear God. In other words, God will be
on the side of those who do the right thing when nobody is looking, who live
the best life they can without reward, and those who turn the other cheek under
oppression. God will be a witness for
those who feel that the world takes advantage of them.
At the end
of this book, we hear God tell us that we will know the difference between the righteous
and the wicked. We will know His
healing. We will leap in joy. We will tread down the wicked. The day is coming when we will be able to
fully live in His will and know life as He intends.
