2 Chronicles
6 is all about the tribe of Levi. These
are the people who are enlisted in the service of the Lord. These are the people entrusted with the
worship of the people. These are the
ones out of whom the priests who serve before God are chosen. Note that they get their own chapter, much
like David’s line got their own chapter.
Being among
the spiritual leadership, they are not given land. Instead, they are divided up among the other
tribes. They are to minister among the
people. They are to be supported by the sacrifices
of the people they serve. They are to be
supported by the land among the people they serve.
Unfortunately,
I think this is a point that human beings miss.
The spiritual leadership under God’s design aren’t given great
wealth. They aren’t given great
prestige. They aren’t given many of the
trappings of greatness in the world.
Instead, they are given the mantle of service.
Spiritual
leaders serve others. Spiritual leaders work
for the people around them. Spiritual
leaders become great not through their material gain or through their communal status
but rather through their influence into the lives of those around them. Spiritual leadership is not a path to worldly
gain but godliness.
