Chapter 3 is
all about the lineage of David. Looking
at the remaining lineage chapters, it’s pretty clear that every tribe gets a
section devoted to them. David, however,
gets his own special section. The
Chronicler wants to tie his people back to their place in the revelation of God’s
Messiah. The story of the Hebrew people
is all about how God has relationship with His people and how God is going to
work through His people in bringing about His Messiah.
The fact that
this message is done through a genealogy makes it a bit hard to get excited
about. Honestly, though, how excited am
I to discover God’s Messiah? How much
research am I willing to do to connect me to God’s plan of salvation? Am I willing to look back hundreds of years
to seek what God is trying to say to me and teach me?
The
Chronicler was willing to do the research.
He was willing to track the genealogy.
He wanted to know the Messiah and connect his people to Him. For the Chronicler, it wasn’t enough to know
God’s promise. He wanted to know his own
place within plan. He searched for his
people’s place in the plan. He desired
for them to know God’s purpose in them.
