Discipleship Focus: Obedience
- Obedience: Genuine and satisfying obedience comes out of our identity. Our true identity comes only from Father.
- Identity: Our true identity comes from God. Only when our identity comes from God can we be obedient in ways that satisfy our person to our core.
In the
very beginning of Genesis 2 we have a focus upon the Sabbath. People commonly think of the Sabbath as a day
of doing nothing. That’s not
correct. We see Jesus telling us that
the Sabbath can encompass work, but it should be the Lord’s work. There are six days that we can be about the
work of the world. The Sabbath is
separate, holy. It is the day we focus
upon doing the work of the Lord.
This
speaks to the issue of obedience. In
fact, the Sabbath is fundamentally an issue of obedience. Do we believe that life is best lived when we
focus upon the work of the Lord? Are we
willing to put aside our agendas even for a single day in order to live out our
obedience to God?
Of
course, this leads us back to the rest of Genesis 2. Our obedience comes out of our identity. Our identity comes out of the Father. That fact is seldom clearer in the Bible than
in this chapter. Who is it that shapes
us, forms us, breathes into us, and gives us purpose? It is the Father. Everything we are, our whole identity, comes
from the Father.
