Discipleship Focus: Calling
- Calling asks whether or not God has called the person to the particular work at this point in their life.
One of the most striking aspects of Esau is his inability to sense
calling. He is put in the perfect
opportunity. He is the firstborn in the
lineage of Abraham. God has already
promised that not only would Abraham have many descendants but that the world
would be blessed through his descendants.
However, the Bible tells us that Esau thinks too little (despised) of his
birthright. He is in the perfect place
to be a part of God’s plan and he just doesn’t value the calling.
On the other hand, there is Jacob.
Jacob seizes his opportunity. He
convinces Esau to sell him his birthright.
As we’ll see in a few chapters, Jacob may not have the greatest
character in the beginning of his life.
But he absolutely senses his calling to be a part of God’s people and he
seizes the opportunity fully.
